Simply Draw with Bob Parsons is part of Timberdoodle's 7th grade Curriculum Kit but can be used with any child in any grade. This unique drawing program is the perfect addition to any homeschool that can be added to your regular routine, or used during Christmas or summer break to keep the workload light yet educational.

What I love about this program is that the lessons can be completed directly in the workbook. I did buy an extra notepad for my kids to practice the techniques on, just for extra practice, but this book has space for kids to create—it is not just a textbook. Plus, you also have access to a PDF of practice pages that go along with what is taught in the lessons. With guides to follow, the lessons are self-explanatory with online access as the icing on the cake. The video-based instruction helps kids home in on basic skills needed to build a strong foundation in their drawing.

What does a Simply Draw with Bob Parsons purchase include?

  • 178 page instructional workbook
  • Online access to video demonstrations
  • PDF files of practice pages

You will need to use your own pens and pencils, card stock, a kneaded rubber eraser, and cool grey markers. The recommended drawing tools for this course are included in the front of the workbook. This is one of the most unique workbooks that I have ever placed in front of my children—which I love. It reads like a textbook with encouraging instructions for children at any level. The instructions are so easy to follow that even the most timid learner will feel at ease with the instructions. You can tell that the author put significant time and thought into how he presented the material.

I don't know what it is with art, but some people believe that you have to have a natural-born talent to do art, including drawing. I firmly believe that it is a skill that can be taught. If you are willing to dedicate the time and effort (and be willing to learn from mistakes), you can go far. What turns people off to drawing can often be that they have tried and feel like they failed. I would argue that maybe they just didn't have the right tools, or they didn't learn the basics. In the same way that you can't do Algebra well if you haven't mastered the fundamentals of basic math, you may struggle with drawing if you haven't mastered lines. Some kids are turned off by the first few lessons because they don't want to "just draw lines," but a strong foundation is key, building confidence and strength.

This program easily guides children through the basics of drawing leading them to more complex projects that gives them the tools they need to let their creativity soar.
