Photography 4 Teens (A Timberdoodle Review)

Photography 4 Teens is a Film School for Teens product found in the Timberdoodle 9th Grade Curriculum Kit. My middle teen got a head start on this course before the official school year began after taking part in an exclusive photography class at our state's homeschool convention earlier this year. He fell in love with photography and his camera. I have to confess, his camera is actually my old DLSR that broke. Somehow and in some way, he was able to get it up and running again. I sold it to him for a fraction of the cost, thinking he could make some money selling it on eBay for parts, but he was determined to get it up and running again, and he did!

When this book arrived in his curriculum kit, he was surprised to see that the course was designed for cellphone use which is great news for teens wanting to perfect their photography skills on their phones. Fortunately, he was able to adjust the assignments to work for his DSLR, and some of the video lessons did, in fact, touch on DSLR camera use.

What's Included

In this course, you receive access to a 12-week photography course with online access to the lessons, videos, and quizzes. You also receive a physical notebook to pencil in your notes.

My son appreciated the high-quality images in the physical notebook and the ease of the notetaking process. The middle school years can be challenging when it comes to notetaking skills, and in homeschooling, it is a skill that parents have to be intentional about because otherwise, it could slide through the cracks. Since the notebook is set up with fill-in-the-blanks, the intimidation factor is eliminated, and the student can focus on the task at hand rather than worry about needing to write an essay.

How Do the Lessons Work?

The lessons follow a simple module that is easy for a middle or high school student to follow. They work through the tasks for each section (that coincide with each week), and it checks it off when completed. Each lesson includes a lesson, workshop, bonus content, notes, and a quiz. These include videos, external links, and a quiz that is taken and graded online. The student is then required to do their workbook assignment and a task (or tasks) with their own camera.

As a homeschooling mom, I appreciate the hands-on aspect of this course. They have practical assignments teaching them how to learn or perfect a skill. The image below is one that my son took for one of his assignments for this class!

I love the variety of teaching methods in this class, from the physical workbook to the videos to the assignments where the student will put into practice what they just learned. If your teen has even the slightest interest in photography, I highly recommend this online photography class for teens!
