From the world of Wonder, which sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter: White Bird. Struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled for his treatment of Auggie Pullman, Julian (Bryce Gheisar) is visited by his grandmother (Helen Mirren) and is transformed by the compassionate and heroic story of her attempts to escape Nazi-occupied France during WWII. From the director of Finding Neverland, White Bird reminds us to be brave and choose kind.

This film captures the heart of friendship, kindness, forgiveness, and hope all while embracing the horrific events of occupied France during WWII. This movie is unique in that it focuses on a single fifteen-year-old Jewish girl's sudden realization that she was no longer safe in the country which she has always called home.
This movie focuses on the bully from the blockbuster Wonder. My favorite part of the film was when his grandmother said that she did not like to talk about her experience during the war, but for his sake, she will. I noticed this to be true in my family who experienced the Dutch Occupation at the same time. My grandparents and their siblings would not talk about it, which was completely understandable. As they began to get older though, they began to share their story. When Corrie Ten Book released The Hiding Place, my aunt who survived the same concentration camp began to share a little more, now that some of what happened there behind closed doors was starting to come out into the open.
The last member of my family with these experiences passed away during the pandemic and we are now entering into an age where very few survivors remain. This is the perfect time for a movie of this type to be released. If stories like this are not passed on from generation to generation, they are likely to be lost. It is important for films like this to be used not only for entertainment but for educational purposes. Though geared for older students due to the violence and language, this could be used for homeschooling. There is also a secular rap song near the beginning of the film that I thought I should note, knowing the audience of this blog.
