The inspiring true story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler who, separated from his family by a fast-moving storm, must fight to stay alive while lost for nine-days in the remote wilderness of northern Maine. Donn’s disappearance captures national headlines and sparks a massive search effort attracting hundreds of volunteers, including his own father who fears he may never see his son again. His fight to survive gained national attention by even Franklin D. Roosevelt who awarded him a medal for outstanding youth heroism.
Set in the 1930s, this film beautifully portrays the struggles of this young twin in this coming of age film. When his mother was told that one of the sons was lost during the hike, she secretly hoped that it was Don since she believed in her heart that of her three boys, Don would have the highest chance of survival. Not that she wished this tragedy on anyone, but it gave her hope during those nine treacherous days that no mother should ever have to endure. In the clip below, you will see a sneak peek into the film revealing the three pieces of advice that his father had taught him prior to that fateful hike. His dad could only hope and pray that Don would remember these three tips while lost in the wilderness.
Quite a few homeschoolers have a survival mindset and have a bugout bag ready for action if put in a dangerous situation, but what if you had nothing? Absolutely nothing but the clothes on your back. This film shows what he did have—the will to live. If you have an adventurous child eager to get out in the wilderness to attempt survival, take him to this film! (Parents: please note that this movie is rated PG with mild language.) Check out the testimonials below from others who have watched this film already!
One aspect that threw my kids off were the hallucinations, but I personally am glad that they were included in the film because I know this is common. When you are in a traumatic situation, oftentimes your mind will do what it can to protect you, especially as a child. Also, comfort food is usually what a person longs for when in a situation like this. This is a very common reality for those in similar situations whether on the mission field, in war, and, as I learned in this movie, those lost with very little. This movie was based on the book with the same name and he stated that these hallucinations were real to him and although a bit strange at times, I appreciated that they were included. The viewer is able to experience what happened through his eyes. Check out this brand new family-friendly movie for yourself and let me know what you think!
