What About Guest Posting?

You have a blog. You finally nailed down the template that works best. You have a handful of posts up and you are ready for the Internet to enjoy your content. Then you look at your pageviews. Eight on one post. Three on another. Your monthly views are under 1k and you cannot figure out why. You are sharing your posts on social media. What is going on?

It all comes down to reaching your target demographic.

Your friends from high school following you on social media might not be interested in your content—as harsh as that might sound, it just might not resonate with them. Your best friend from high school might be a business woman while you are a stay-at-home mom—or vice-versa. Sure, you will gain a few cheerleaders to help encourage you along your blogging journey but if you want to grow your blog beyond just a family affair, you will need to take a few extra steps. Readers in your demographic are out there—you just need to find them.

One way to reach readers that will benefit from your content is to participate in guest posting. What exactly is guest posting? This is when you create fresh new content for another website, in your genre, to help reach a new audience, gain new readership, and help with SEO on your blog.

To be honest, I was hesitant about this approach at first since it generally not a paid gig. Once I actually saw the benefits on my blog though, I was convinced that this is a beneficial way to get your brand out there, and grow your blog at the same time.

As soon as I started writing for other websites that offered a backlink to my blog, I saw an increased growth in traffic to my site. Not only am I able to share my content with a new audience, but I can practice my writing skills since these opportunities generally have specific topics or guidelines to adhere to. Boundaries can challenge us and help us work outside of our comfort zone—providing an opportunity for growth.

Get Started with Guest Posting

  • Start with your inbox. Find a handful of your favorite blogs in your niche. Go to their About or Contact page on their site and see if they invite guest posters. If they do not say anything about it, reach out! It never hurts to ask!

  • Once you have landed a guest post on a blog make sure you keep your content relevant to their audience. Take a look at the past few posts that the blog owner has written and check out the style. Of course you want to write in your own voice, but stay consistent with the general theme of the blog you will be posting on.

  • Make sure to include a detailed bio with a link back to your blog. Check and double-check that the backlink is the correct one and that it is working when the post goes LIVE.

  • Share the content when it is posted! You do not want to leave all of the work in the hands of the owner of the blog. The other blog owner will get the content in front of new eyeballs for you so do your part and get her blog name in front of your readers to benefit her!

Whatever your niche, guest posting is an excellent way to help grow your blog regardless of the size of your blog! Do you have a homeschooling or parenting blog and want to submit a guest post to Thrift Schooling? Shoot me an email at thriftschooling at gmail.com and I'll send you the guidelines. Be sure to include Guest Post Inquiry in the subject line.
