Have you always wanted to eat like a president? Now you can! Take a look at these easy-to-prepare meals selected from a handful of former American presidents' list of favs and go ahead and give yourself permission to eat like a president for a day.
Don't worry. I spared you some of the recipes with more difficult ingredients to work with such as turtle and squirrel!
Celebrating Presidents Day can happen in so many different ways from unit studies to worksheets to crafts. Why not add cooking to the mix? Pick a single recipe or make a full day of it. Choose from one recipe for each meal of the day (and dessert!) or try both. I paired complementary recipes for each meal if you have a large family or growing children that would appreciate the generous portion sizes.
EAT LIKE A PRESIDENT FOR A DAY
⭐George Washington: Hoecakes ⭐
Basically the same concept as pancakes, but made with cornmeal. The recipe here makes it easy to make the change by using Jiffy cornbread mix. You can still add your favorite toppings and be sure to slather with plenty of butter!
⭐Jimmy Carter: Cheesy Grits ⭐
As a Yankee-gone-Southerner, I did not grow up with traditional Southern staples such as biscuits and gravy or grits. Though I certainly did get on board with them as soon as I was introduced to them. Grits took awhile to take off in my house but as soon as one of my kids piled the cheddar cheese both on and in them, we were hooked—at least I am! This simple yet filling (and cheesy) dish leaves me satisfied every time.
⭐Franklin D. Roosevelt: Grilled Cheese ⭐
If you plan on becoming president one day, you might want to choose your favorite food wisely. Franklin D. Roosevelt did just that, picking an all-American favorite that has stood the test of time.
⭐ James Madison: Virginia Ham ⭐
Slice it thin and add some to your grilled cheese sandwich or eat separately on the side or in a salad.
⭐ John F. Kennedy: New England Fish Chowder ⭐
Packed with flavor and aromatic ingredients, this recipe is certain to satisfy! Begin prepping early in the day for tasty flavor profiles.
⭐ Theodore Roosevelt: Fried Chicken ⭐
There are several ways to approach fried chicken. Thighs are a great cut to fry because of the dark meat yet if you prefer white meat, fried chicken fingers are the way to go. Check out this simple and fun recipe that we use in our home often.
⭐ Thomas Jefferson: French Vanilla Ice-Cream ⭐
I personally give you permission to enjoy ice-cream in the winter. We drink hot drinks in the summer too, don't we? Buy yourself a pint (or gallon!) or go all out and make this six-ingredient recipe yourself.
⭐Calvin Coolidge: Jelly Roll ⭐
I love the variety of the favorite dishes from past presidents. Some sweet, some savory. These sweet treats absolutely make my mouth water! It has been said that this particular president preferred strawberry filling in his jelly roll which makes this all the more appetizing!
